Patient Information from Your Edmonton Dentist – Brushing & Flossing

Regular checkups and treatments can result in huge improvements for your oral health, but there`s also a lot that you can do at home to improve the feel and appearance of your teeth. At Abbotsfield Dental in Edmonton, we know that at-home care is critical for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums, so we’re always eager to educate you about effective oral care practices.

Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing should be done at least twice a day, at morning and at night. You may also want to brush after a meal, although be careful to wait at least an hour to brush your teeth after eating or drinking anything acidic. This is to avoid rubbing the acids into your teeth and damaging the enamel. Follow these steps to properly brush your teeth:

  1. Use a soft-bristled brush and wet the brush slightly to avoid irritating your gums.
  2. Apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste with fluoride.
  3. Point the bristles at a 45 degree angle from your teeth and gums and brush using a gentle, circular massaging motion. Don’t scrub too hard, as this can result in gum recession.
  4. Brushing should take 2 to 3 minutes. Occasionally change your pattern to make sure you get every part of your teeth. Pay special attention to the gum line.
  5. Brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria and freshen your breath.
  6. Spit out your toothpaste and rinse with water.

Flossing

You don’t need to floss quite as often as you brush your teeth, but it’s still important to floss daily, ideally right before bed. Follow these steps to do it properly:

  1. Take about 18 inches of floss and secure it by wrapping it around your fingers.
  2. Insert the floss between two of your teeth and use gentle back and forth movements to clean your teeth. Be sure to clean above the gum line.
  3. Repeat between each of your teeth. Don’t forget the back molars and any insertions you may have.

If you’re following these steps when cleaning your teeth, your dentist appointments should go more smoothly than ever. Call Abbotsfield Dental today to schedule an appointment for your next checkup.
